'“Gratitude is the ability to experience life as a gift. It liberates us from the prison of self-preoccupation." — John Ortberg
Gratitude, or the act of being thankful, is one of the most basic values I am happy to have learned early in life. As my mother used to tell us when we were little that "Eni toba dupe ore ana, a ri imi gba" means "The person that says thank you for yesterday's gift will receive more and more." I doubt I ever go a day without expressing gratitude to someone or my creator. I find it extremely important to express my gratitude to others for even the tiniest acts of kindness because the world is already so chaotic and everyone has a lot going on, so being thankful is a thing for me.
Moreover, the act of being thankful is for me as well and not just to appreciate others. Concentrating on what I have rather than what I lack was made possible by gratitude. Occasionally, when I take the time to acknowledge and appreciate what I have to be grateful for, it makes me feel happier, more optimistic, and better able to tackle obstacles. Actually, these days when things aren't exactly going my way, I take conscious effort not to overwhelm myself. Let's face it, regardless of your personal circumstances, it may be quite challenging to express thankfulness on a regular basis. Many of us are prone to negativity bias, which causes us to focus on negative events and news while pushing happy memories to the background.
However, things improve the instant you begin to see life in a different light. Practicing thankfulness can lift your spirits significantly. Less room for depression. Gratitude practice helps you to change your focus from unpleasant feelings and experiences. Rather, you start concentrating on positive aspects that you might have missed. This right here has really helped me!
For me, being thankful is now a trait I have embodied. I suppose that this trait that I value greatly has also contributed to my ability to be liked by others.
In case you're still confused, the word "Eucharistia" is a Greek word which means "Gratitude." I hope you also learn to practice the act of gratitude all the time.
Love,
Temiloluwa.💕
