I've only ever appreciated writing from a distance from those I've met who are truly talented writers.
I've always just happened to have good writers as close friends and family. My late grandfather was the first person I ever encountered who could write so well. Before he grew extremely old, he wrote virtually every day during the roughly 13 years that we lived together. Ranging from meeting minutes, diaries, journals, articles, and even a few books he wrote.
As a young child, I had always appreciated writing, but I have no desire to indulge in it for myself.
A few years later, I started to like writing—just random documentations, lengthy emails and letters to friends, as well as using it to vent or post long updates on my WhatsApp status, lol. I never thought I would take writing seriously enough to pursue a career in it.
I used to say to people that while others stress eat I stress type; I just write.
I created a WordPress account in 2019, wrote a few drafts that I later deleted, and that website was never published online. In the end, I decided to delete the account.
But over time, especially when I launched my baking brand in 2020, I started to really enjoy writing copy for brands. I would just create copy for friends' brands and even those of strangers, possibly a buddy of a friend who also has a brand. By the way, I never charged them a single Naira for it.
Several times, a close friend of mine who is a skilled writer pushed me to pursue writing, but I kept telling myself, "No, I don't think that part is for me." I believe that one of the reasons I often ignore his advice is because I believe my writing is not even half as good as his. so how na?. I had forgotten that mastery requires persistence and that learning is a process. He saw the vision long before I did, and for that, I will always be grateful.♥
After an incident, I took the random decision to open a Substack account one random day in January 2023. That same day, I posted my first piece on Substack. I published my writing online. I started writing and publishing a piece each month after I made the decision to start writing online. In less than a year, I reached my first 100 subscribers. Almost every week, I receive messages from readers telling me how much they like my writing and how some of it has inspired them to take the appropriate action. I figured I don’t even know about 45% of the people reading my blog on a personal level, just wow! By writing, I'm creating a community, and when I look back on how I got started in a few years, I aim to be proud of who I am, how I started, and the incredible community I've created here.
So far, it has been an amazing journey and gradually moved to the top of my list of favourite things to do. 💕
A big shout-out to everyone who reads everything I put out here. Thank you!🥂
