This month, if there’s one thing I’ve held onto, it’s this: truly, opportunity favours the prepared mind.
I remember hearing my teacher say something along these lines a while ago: Don’t waste away your waiting period. Get busy. Find a mentor. Learn something. Do something. And whatever you find yourself doing, give it your best.
It reminded me of something else I’ve heard countless times: you don’t prepare for war during the war; you prepare for war before the war.
And I think there’s something particularly interesting about preparation because, sometimes, you don’t even realise you’re preparing. Some things happen long before you need them to. You meet certain people, learn certain skills, find yourself in unfamiliar rooms, take on responsibilities you didn't think much of at the time, and go through experiences that seem completely unrelated to where you’re headed.
Then, suddenly, you find yourself in a room where you need that exact skill. Or someone asks you a question and you realise you’ve encountered the answer before. Or an opportunity presents itself, and you realise that the things you thought were random were actually adding up. Like crazyyy o!
You know what? Maybe that’s the thing about preparation... You often don't know what you're being prepared for while you're being prepared.
Anyway, if the opportunity hasn't arrived yet, perhaps the invitation is not to sit around waiting for it, but to become the kind of person who will be ready when it does.
