Asake,
Somewhere between a conversation and a song, I started noticing you.
I don’t remember exactly when I started paying attention to your smile.
Perhaps it was there from the beginning and I simply didn’t know it would become something I’d remember. There is just something about the way it appears; slowly, and sometimes without warning that makes it difficult not to notice. It’s so beautiful to witness.
And your eyes.
I have never quite figured out what they are saying when you look at me. Maybe that’s part of the problem. Or perhaps that’s what makes looking back a little more interesting than it should be.
Then there is your skin.
Soft.
That’s really all I have to say about that.
Isn’t it funny how the smallest things can become the things you remember most.
Like the warmth of being close to you. The kind of moments that don’t look like much from the outside but somehow become little bookmarks in your memory.
And then there is music.
Maybe that’s where this story really begins.
Our first conversations had music somewhere in between them, and before I knew it, you were listening to one of my favourite artists.
I remember that.
I don’t know why I remember that.
There’s a certain tenderness in knowing someone cares enough to listen to the things you love. You didn’t have to. There was no grand significance attached to it. It was just music.
But somehow, you pressed play.
And I noticed.
I guess that’s what I’ve been trying to say all along.
I notice you.
I notice the smile.
The eyes.
The softness.
The songs you listen to.
The little things you probably don’t think anyone remembers.
I don’t know when these details started becoming important to me. I only know that they did.
And perhaps this is how liking someone begins.
Quietly.
With no announcement.
Just a song you shared, a smile you remember, and the strange realisation that you’ve started paying attention.
So, Asake, this is the first of the things I probably won’t tell you.
At least, not yet.
Oh! My bad…How could I have forgotten I already mentioned that in the most selfish way possible, I hope there are always little pieces of you that only make sense to me?
💜

This is beautifully written. It has a singsong feeling to it.
